What the keyword match really tells you

A job listing can mention specific skills, tasks, tools and credentials. The scanner compares important words in that listing with terms in your pasted resume. If the listing says “monthly reporting” and “Excel dashboards” but the resume never mentions either, review whether your genuine work experience supports those descriptions. Matching vocabulary helps a human reader find relevant evidence; it cannot establish that you are qualified or guarantee an interview.

Review the result without gaming it

Start with the missing-terms list. Separate skills you actually have from skills you do not. Bring relevant experience into bullet points with context and measurable outcomes rather than stuffing keywords into a hidden paragraph. For example, “Created a weekly Excel dashboard for 15 store managers” tells a stronger story than “Excel, Excel, dashboard.” The structure check identifies possible headings and achievements, not formatting compatibility with an employer’s proprietary software.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example workflow

Try a resume that says “Built monthly sales reports in spreadsheets” and a job listing seeking “Excel dashboards, reporting and stakeholder communication.” Compare the suggestions, then rewrite your genuine achievements. The match number is a vocabulary estimate, not an official ATS score.

Three things to remember

  • Remove phone numbers and personal identifiers before pasting unless needed for your own work.
  • Use the exact job description; a generic one gives less useful feedback.
  • Keep the final resume readable for people, not only keyword algorithms.

Frequently asked question

Does the tool connect to an employer ATS?

No. It locally compares text; employer systems use varying parsers and criteria.
