How to convert a PDF to plain text

  1. Choose a PDF that contains selectable text, such as an exported report, PDF resume, or digital document.
  2. Click Extract text. Your browser reads the file and extracts text page by page.
  3. Review the extracted result. Click Copy text to paste it elsewhere, or download a UTF-8 .txt file.

Example

Suppose you have a two-page PDF resume exported from a word processor. Upload it to the converter. You can then copy the extracted job history to review its wording, or paste it into our Resume Keyword Scanner for a keyword comparison.

Limitations and privacy

Digital PDFs versus scans. An exported PDF usually contains actual character data and is suitable for extraction. A scanned piece of paper may contain only photographs of words. For these, screenshot a portion and try our Image to Text OCR tool.

Tables and columns. Text extraction may change reading order, whitespace, ligatures, and table alignment. Proofread names, values and important passages before reuse.

Security. The converter uses self-hosted, open-source PDF.js scripts in your browser. The selected PDF is never sent to a ToolForge file-processing endpoint. Cloudflare hosting and Google advertising scripts still have their own technical data policies, described in our privacy notice.

Encrypted and very large PDFs. Password-protected files may be unsupported. Files over 10 MB or documents over 30 pages are rejected to keep the browser responsive.
